Scientists think Gold was produced by supernova nucleosynthesis and by the collision of neutron stars. It would have been present in the dust from which the solar system formed. Because the Earth was molten when it was created, almost all the gold present in the early Earth probably sank to the planetary core.

How is Gold formed?

Gold is at least as old as our planet but was not made here. The production of Gold requires fusion reactions in the core of stars. For this, the star must be heavy enough, with a mass starting at eight times that of the sun. These giant stars end up in an explosion or supernova in which heavy metals are formed. Then dust particles containing tiny pieces of Gold are catapulted into space. Those dust particles end up in the coalescing matter around a star-forming planet.

So all the Gold on Earth was created when a giant star exploded, and the dust particles entered the gravitational field of our sun at the same time that the planets in our solar system were formed.

How do other types of gold form?

We mix Gold with other materials to make it stronger to turn it into jewelry. This is how we get three different types of Gold: yellow Gold, White Gold, and Red Gold. They all consist of the same kind of yellow Gold at the base. Then we add other materials to obtain the colors white, Gold, and Red Gold. With White Gold, we add an alloy of palladium, silver, or zinc, which gives the jewel a white color. We add an alloy with copper and zinc for red Gold, and the treasure gets a soft red-pink color.

Where can Gold be found?

Gold is usually mined in gold mines, but Gold can also be found in rivers. We also extract Gold in factories by recycling existing materials. Gold is incorporated into electronics because it is a good conductor of electricity. That Gold is subsequently removed from smartphones or computers and such.

Gold is one of the most precious commodities on our planet. It is found in thin layers deep underground and mined in rough chunks or grit. Gold can also be extracted from streams or the bottom of rivers. The water constantly scours a bit of the soil or rocks; there may be small grains or nuggets of Gold in that silt. In places where the river flows more slowly, the gold grains sink to the bottom.

Raw Gold is melted and poured into specific shapes, such as bars. As the Gold cools, it hardens again and settles to the mold. This is how we can then make shapes and jewelry with it.

Gold is found mainly in areas where earthquakes are frequent, or there is volcanic activity. During an earthquake, the pressure in the rock along the fault can drop briefly, causing the water in the rock to evaporate in a fraction of a second. Substances dissolved in the water, such as Gold and silicates, then precipitate. This is how gold veins can form, although it can take about a hundred thousand years.

You can find tiny gold veins all over the world, but it is not distributed equally. The areas where real gold diggers have tremendous success can be found in America, Canada, Australia, China, Russia, or South Africa. There, enormous lumps of 10 kilograms have already been extracted from the ground.
