It was a tough fight for the San Francisco 49ers as they battled in Tampa and lost their second game of the 2025 season, falling 30-19 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium. The loss came with a heartbreaking injury to team captainFred Warner, who went down with an ankle injury midway through the first quarter. Despite the loss, many players stepped up in all three phases to keep the contest competitive. The 49ers now sit at 4-2 on the year.
Here are five takeaways from the 49ers-Buccaneers game:
RBChristian McCaffreyPowered the Attack
McCaffrey continued to drive the offense, notching the 49ers first rushing touchdown of the season and producing several chunk gains that sustained drives. He was heavily involved as a runner and receiver, keeping the offense moving against a physical Buccaneers front. McCaffrey finished the night with 54 rushing yards, 57 receiving yards, and one touchdown.
WRKendrick Bournewas the No. 1 Target
Bourne made splash plays a few times in this contest, including a 41-yard reception in the first quarter and a 56-yard catch in the second quarter. "KB" was QBMac Jones' go-to option on several key snaps and his long gains helped fuel scoring drives. Bourne walked away from Week 6 with 142 yards on five catches for an average of 28.4 yards.
DLMykel WilliamsNotches First-Career Sack
San Francisco's defense battled through adversity after Warner exited with an injury. Rookie first-round pick Mykel Williams recorded a first-career sack, and the defense made multiple tackles-for-loss to keep Tampa Bay from consistently dominating on the ground. The TFLs in Tampa came from CBUpton Stout, SMarques Sigle, DLBryce Huff, and DBDeommodore Lenoir.
KEddy Pieiro's Trustworthy Leg
Pieiro kept the 49ers in the game with several long field goals, including from beyond 50 yards. His accuracy this season remains a bright spot and a reliable scoring option in close games. After his 42-yard field goal, Pieiro has passed Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker on the all-time list in field goal percentage with 89.13 percent accuracy. Pieiro made field goals from 52, 54, 42, and 29 yards out for a total of 13 points on the night, including his second quarter PAT.
Turnovers Hurt the Final Score
The 49ers put together multiple sustained drives and had a few late-yardage plays, but turnovers and a few errors stalled the offense at critical moments. The team didn't let up, moving the chains and creating some scoring chances, yet a fourth quarter interception plus a Buccaneers field goal closed out the Week 6 game in Tampa Bay.
The 49ers now stand at 4-2 and will be back home to play against the Atlanta Falcons in primetime on "Sunday Night Football" on October 19.
